The national Architectural Woodworking Institute was founded in 1953 in Chicago, and now has chapters throughout the United States. The organization began as an outgrowth of the Millwork Cost Bureau. One of the organization's most important contributions was publishing the Architectural Woodwork Quality Standards Illustrated. This set of standards, first published in 1961, have been adopted throughout North America - by the Architectural Woodwork Institute in the United States, and by the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturer Association of Canada.
